Notarial services in Thailand

Thailand has no notary public in the common-law sense. The equivalent function is performed by a Notarial Services Attorney — a lawyer licensed by the Lawyers Council of Thailand under the Lawyers Act B.E. 2528 who has completed the Council's notarial services training and holds a current registration. Our guides explain which certifications an attorney can lawfully issue (signature witnessing, true-copy certification, affidavits, statutory declarations), what identification the signer must present in person, and how the certification feeds into the legalisation chain.

MFA legalisation and the Apostille timeline

Documents leaving Thailand are legalised by the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and then by the destination country's embassy where that country requires it. Thailand's accession to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention enters into force on 28 February 2027; until then the two-step chain remains mandatory, and no Apostille fee schedule has been published. Our articles track official announcements only — we never publish a rate the issuing authority has not announced.

Certified and NAATI translation

Different receiving authorities accept different forms of translation certification: a translator's certificate of accuracy, an MFA-accepted translation, or — for Australian immigration and academic use — a NAATI-certified translator. The guides set out which one each authority actually asks for, so a file is not rejected for using the wrong certification level.
