Is a Thai Notarial Services Attorney equivalent to a notary public?

Thailand does not have a civil-law notary; instead the Lawyers Council of Thailand registers lawyers who have completed notarial training to certify signatures, copies and statutory declarations. The attorney's registration number appears on the certificate so the receiving authority can verify it.

What do I have to bring to a notarial appointment?

Bring the unsigned document, your passport or Thai ID card, and any supporting evidence the destination asks for, such as a company registration extract for corporate signings. Do not sign the document in advance: the attorney must witness the signature for the certificate to be valid.

Can a notarised Thai document be used abroad immediately?

It depends on the receiving authority. Some universities and private companies accept the notarial certificate alone. Government bodies, courts and immigration authorities usually require further legalisation through the Department of Consular Affairs and the destination embassy, or an Apostille once the Convention is in force for Thailand.
