NYC Legal has continuously served Notary cases in Bangkok (Thailand) since 2016. We understand the documents this neighbourhood needs most — work-permit affidavits, cross-border powers of attorney, and real-estate authorisations for foreign counterparties.
This page references regulations from the Lawyers Council of Thailand, the Department of Consular Affairs (MFA), and the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention — Thailand acceded as a member state in 2023.

These are the most frequent questions clients in Bangkok ask before booking Notary Public Profile. Each answer is reviewed quarterly by our editorial team against current Lawyers Council, MFA, and embassy guidance, so the dates, fees, and process windows on this page stay accurate.
Before we file your Notary Public Profile with the MFA or any embassy, every case passes a 12-point checklist. This is the same checklist used internally by our senior counsel during the final QA step.
Each of the 3 items below is a matter type our team handles end-to-end — document preparation, certification, and submission to the relevant Thai or foreign authority.

Thailand has no separate notary profession. Notarial acts are performed by a Notarial Services Attorney — a lawyer trained and registered with the Lawyers Council of Thailand. NYC Legal's attorneys certify signatures, affidavits, powers of attorney, certified true copies and corporate resolutions intended for use overseas.

Thailand has no common-law Notary Public. Certification is performed by a Notarial Services Attorney registered with the Lawyers Council of Thailand, and overseas recipients accept that signature once the chain above it is correct.
Notarial certification in Thailand is performed by a Notarial Services Attorney licensed by the Lawyers Council of Thailand. The work itself is quick, but the wording of the certificate must match what the receiving authority abroad expects.
Typical timeline: Signature certification is normally completed the same day when documents are complete and an appointment is booked.
| Aspect | On your own | With NYC Legal |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing the certificate format | You must interpret the destination's rules yourself and risk the wrong wording. | We verify the destination requirement and select wording that is actually accepted. |
| Booking | You need to find and vet a registered notarial attorney. | Immediate appointments with registered attorneys on our team, including out-of-hours by arrangement. |
| Follow-on steps | Ministry and embassy steps must be arranged separately. | We sequence the whole chain in one workflow and report status at each stage. |
Advisory note: We are not only a document runner. With more than 15 years of experience we act as your advisor, mapping the full chain from the first signature to the receiving authority so you avoid trial and error.
“Certification” in Thailand covers several different routes with different legal effects. The table below compares what each route is, when it fits, and where files usually get rejected.
| Option | What it is | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Notarial Services Attorney (Thailand) | A lawyer licensed by the Lawyers Council of Thailand to certify signatures and documents. | Signature and true-copy certification, powers of attorney, documents for foreign schools or companies. | This is not a US-style Notary Public; some receiving parties still require consular legalization on top. |
| MFA legalization (Department of Consular Affairs) | Certification of the signature/seal of the issuing Thai authority by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. | Thai civil and government records used abroad: house registration, marriage, birth, police clearance. | Translations must follow the format the MFA accepts, otherwise the file is returned and you lose a cycle. |
| Destination embassy / consulate legalization | A further certification by the destination country's embassy in Thailand after the MFA step. | Countries that do not accept an Apostille, or authorities that explicitly require an embassy stamp. | Each embassy has its own intake days, forms and translation requirements — verify before filing. |
| Apostille (Hague Convention of 1961) | A single-layer certification used between member states in place of multi-step embassy legalization. | Documents issued in one member state and used in another member state. | Thailand deposited its instrument of accession on 30 June 2026 and the Convention enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027. Until then Thai documents still follow the MFA + embassy route. |
Our team has spent 15+ years on certification and cross-border document work. We are not only a filing agency: we act as advisers who map out which route your document should take, how many layers of certification it needs, and whether the receiving authority will accept it before any work begins. If you would rather not learn this by trial and error, send us the case details and we will map the route for you.
Question
Is a Thai Notarial Services Attorney equivalent to a notary public?
Answer
For most destinations, yes. Thailand does not have a civil-law notary; instead the Lawyers Council of Thailand registers lawyers who have completed notarial training to certify signatures, copies and statutory declarations. The attorney's registration number appears on the certificate so the receiving authority can verify it.
