Why marriage abroad needs Notary
Every jurisdiction that registers foreign marriages requires proof of single status and legal capacity via internationally-recognised certification. Notary Public is the mandatory first link in the chain (Notary → MFA → Embassy, or Notary → Apostille) with no substitute. NYC Legal handles 60-90 marriage-abroad couples per month.
Single-Status Affidavit — the core doc
A sworn statement that the signer has no current spouse under Thai law. Must include: name as-per-passport, ID number, address, status (single/widowed/divorced), fiancé(e) name + nationality, country of intended marriage, signature before notary + seal. Germany and Italy also require a Certificate of No Impediment issued by the district office.
Legalisation chain by destination
USA/UK/Australia/Canada (Apostille after 28 Feb 2027): Notary → MFA Apostille → done. Germany/Italy/Spain/France (Apostille + embassy verification): Notary → MFA → Embassy. UAE/Saudi/Singapore in some filings: Notary → MFA → Embassy + destination MFA. We map the exact chain for your target country.
If previously married
Attach a certified Divorce Decree + divorce registration (Kor.Ror. 6). Most countries require proof of divorce at least 300 days prior (to establish non-pregnancy). Germany is especially strict — the court judgment must be certified-translated and apostilled.
LGBTQ+ marriage
Since Thailand's Marriage Equality Act took effect 22 Jan 2025, Thailand issues Single-Status Affidavits to LGBTQ+ couples marrying in the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain, Germany, USA, Australia, Taiwan, etc. Our team is specialised (English/German/Spanish-speaking attorneys).

FAQ
Does the Single-Status Affidavit come from a Thai district office?
The district (amphur) issues it in Thai only — you still need English translation + Notary + MFA + Embassy. We handle both the amphur visit and the full package.
How long are the documents valid?
USA/UK/AU/CA: 6 months · Germany/France/Italy: 3 months (strictest) · Japan/Singapore: 3 months. Book notarisation as close to the wedding date as possible.
What is special about marrying in Germany?
Requires Ehefähigkeitszeugnis (Certificate of No Impediment) from the German embassy registry office + Notary + Apostille + translation by a Beeidigter Übersetzer certified by a German court. We handle all steps.
Can we register at an embassy in Thailand?
Embassies in Bangkok that register direct: Germany, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Norway (needs CNI + Notary). USA, UK, Australia do NOT — you must register back home.
How much faster after 28 Feb 2027?
Hague Apostille members: skip the embassy step, saving 3-7 days and quoted on request per country.
