All NAATI Certification Levels — Choose the Right Tier

Reference guide based on NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters, Australia) — explains every tier and when to use it for documents and interpreting.

Translator stream

CT

Certified Translator

Standard tier for general and moderately complex official documents. Covers ~90% of visa, education, and family translation work. Documents stamped by a NAATI Certified Translator are accepted by the Department of Home Affairs, Medicare, AHPRA, and every Australian university.

CAT

Certified Advanced Translator

Passed advanced testing. Handles technically complex documents — specialist medical manuals, complex international contracts, patent filings, scientific research papers. Suited for forensic translation and expert witness reports.

RPT

Recognised Practising Translator

Awarded by experience for language pairs in which NAATI does not yet hold tests (typically minority languages). Does not apply to Thai-English, which has a full Certified system.

Interpreter stream

CPI

Certified Provisional Interpreter

Entry-level NAATI-recognised tier. Suitable for general dialogue — Centrelink, Medicare, government enquiries, school meetings. Not yet suitable for court or specialist hospital settings.

CI

Certified Interpreter

Standard tier for moderately complex assignments — business negotiations, agency meetings, general hospitals, certain lower-court matters. The most commonly used tier for community work.

CSLI

Certified Specialist Legal Interpreter

Advanced specialist tier for legal work. Used in Supreme/Federal/High Court, AAT, legally-binding statements, major mediations. Passes additional testing in legal terminology and courtroom ethics.

CSHI

Certified Specialist Health Interpreter

Advanced specialist tier for medical work. Used for specialist appointments (oncology, psychiatry, neurology), complex informed-consent, MDT meetings, mental health, obstetrics. Passes additional testing in medical terminology and hospital ethics.

CCI

Certified Conference Interpreter

Highest NAATI tier for national and international conference interpreting. Works simultaneously from a booth. Used at government summits, UN, APEC, ASEAN, leader-level meetings. Very rare for Thai-English pair.

How to verify a NAATI practitioner before hiring

  1. Ask for the practitioner's 3-digit NAATI ID (everyone certified has one).
  2. Open naati.com.au/online/PractitionerSearch.
  3. Enter the NAATI ID or full name — verify status is active (not expired or suspended).
  4. Confirm the tier (CT/CAT/CSLI/etc.) matches your assignment.
  5. Check recertification expiry — NAATI renews every 3 years.

Digital Stamp

Since 2022 NAATI has issued the Digital Stamp embedded with a QR code for verification — digital NAATI documents can be uploaded directly to the Department of Home Affairs ImmiAccount without posting paper. NYC Legal delivers PDFs with Digital Stamp within 24-72 hours depending on volume. Clients can scan the QR at any time to verify authenticity.
