TM.86 vs TM.87
TM.86 = you already hold a Non-Immigrant visa and switch to another Non-Immigrant class. TM.87 = you're on a visa exemption or Tourist visa and convert to Non-Immigrant for the first time.

What happens after approval
Immigration grants 90 days initially. Within the last 30 days, file TM.7 with class-specific documents (e.g. THB 800k bank statement for Retirement). Successful TM.7 grants a full year.
When TM.86 isn't worth it
If your current visa still runs 6+ months and the new class needs unavailable documents (e.g. pending marriage registration), exit and apply for Non-O at a Laos or Malaysia Thai consulate — often faster and cleaner.
